The Value of Nonprofits in a Pinch

While it didn’t make national news, recently in Omaha we had a storm that produced 100 mph winds, knocking down over tens of thousands of trees, cutting power to some 70 to 75% of the population, and caused immense distraction not only to physical property but to people’s lives.

The good news is that Omaha is a resilient place---part of that agricultural farming heritage about getting up each morning and tackling the tasks, not making excuses, and just getting the job done. So, the amazing work of the power crews, city workers, and just great next-door neighbors was not surprising but so evident as the city went through a rapid cleanup to get back to somewhat normal within three or four days. But of course, with any storm or natural disaster, there are always those who are slightly left behind.

While the city of Omaha is doing great to pick up branches and trees if residents put them street side, there are still those who, alone, have limbs and trees too big to move and they are struggling with affording someone to come and do it for them.

INSERT PHILANTHROPY HERE!!!!!

While individuals who need assistance have found neighbors, friends, and family, great nonprofits have stepped up and indicated their willingness to assist were possible. Places like Habitat for Humanity of Omaha agreed to work with people in need to help move those trees and branches, including cutting them up to appropriate size and placing them curbside for the city.

The essence of filling holes. If you ever wonder why nonprofits hold a special place in a community’s hearts and minds, just look when people need it the most and who shows up to get the job done.  And this is why I love my job!
