Traveling Stinks
It seems like a pretty basic title for a blog. But the outcomes and effects are so challenging, it really is much beyond the simple words.
The good news is that the world is beginning to normalize---all of it. That’s a good thing coming out of the pandemic. But in that process, I find myself traveling more. Not nearly as much as I used to, but more than a year ago, for sure. And while there were restrictions and challenges a year ago, they pale in comparison to what we’re dealing with today.
You’ve probably experienced it. Your flights are late, the plane isn’t there, the flight is canceled, no one can answer questions, no one seems to care, and you’re stuck. That’s what I’ve experienced recently. And there seems to be no relief in sight. It’s one of the few instances where you’re truly powerless. You’re inside the airport, behind security, totally dependent on other people and another organization’s problem-solving abilities to get to a destination. There’s nothing you can say that’s going to change the situation. And there’s really nothing you can do about the status quo. You’re totally reliant on others.
I really don’t function well in that type of environment. I’m more of a “take control of the situation” type of person. But this is a scenario where that’s not possible. I am not even sure what all the answers are, but they’re going to have to figure it out if we’re going to get it right. All I can do is leave a little extra time between flights, leave a little earlier in the day, and keep the frustration at a minimum because those are the only things I get to control in the travel world of today.
